Eggs for You & Your Baby!
Eggs are a complete food, packed with 14 vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, D, E and B12, thiamin, folate, niacin and riboflavin and the minerals phosphorus, zinc and iron.
Farm fresh eggs are nutrient dense and make a valuable contribution to you and your baby’s nutrition. They are easy to prepare, require little chewing, and appeal to babies and children.
Egg yolks can be introduced to your baby’s diet around 7 to 8 months. At first only offer the egg yolk, as the white should not be introduced until after the baby has turned 12 months, to reduce the possibility of an allergic reaction.
The egg yolk can be hard-boiled and then mashed or sieved and mixed with breast milk or formula to reach the right consistency for your baby.
At 8 to 9 months the hard-boiled egg yolk can be added to other foods; mixed with puréed vegetables, for example.
At 12 months the whole egg can be introduced to the diet. An egg custard or scrambled egg is wonderful and satisfying for the baby.
Poached Eggs: Bring to the boil a small quantity of water in a pot/frying pan, and reduce to simmering. Crack the egg into the simmering water, cover, and cook until hard. This can be also being done for pre 12-month olds; just give the baby only the yolk.
Hard-Boiled Egg: The best egg for hard-boiling is 2 weeks old. If you are using our very fresh farm eggs refer to
how to boil a fresh egg. Otherwise place a room temperature egg in boiling water and time for 3 to 10 minutes depending on whether you want soft-boiled (running yolk), medium (starting to become solid) or hard-boiled (completely hard yolk).
If eating straight away, there is no need to cool the eggs. If, however, you plan on storing or using them in a salad or as devilled eggs, cool them down under icy cold water as quickly as possible.
Scrambled Egg: Beat one egg and 1 tablespoon of milk together in a small bowl. Melt 1 teaspoon of butter or margarine in a small saucepan, pour the egg mix in and stir until the egg is set. Scrambled eggs are my middle son’s favorite breakfast before he heads off to school. Try adding one of the following for a change: 1 tablespoon of cottage cheese, grated carrot, or chopped parsley.
